ISSUE #112: How the Aliens would look at today's world?
I don’t know if extra-terrestial life is a reality or just a concept, but one thing I’m certain about is that if aliens exist, they wouldn’t look at this world and say “We want to be like humans.” They would see the world as it is, because there would be no one to manipulate them into seeing the world from a biased perspective.
Imagining that the alien saw everything from the emergence of Homo Sapiens to the day you are reading this on, here’s how he would describe what he saw:
Around 200,000-300,000 years ago, a new kind of species emerged on planet Earth. The newly evolved species was never seen before in the history of Earth, not because it was the strongest or the fastest, but because it had developed something that no other life on the planet could ever develop: the ability to think. This unique ability enabled them to protect themselves from sharp-toothed monsters and nature. For a long time, they just roamed around in the search for food and ways to keep themselves protected on a piece of land they call “AFRICA” today.
But around 10,000-12,000 years ago, after thousands of years of struggle against stronger animals and nature, they underwent a radical change in ways they organized. They invented something they call “agriculture” which enabled them to grow, instead of hunting for their food. This invention was so big that it made them exponentially less dependent on other animals for survival and made what they call “civilization” a possibility. They started forming cities, moved out of Africa, and expanded into other habitable lands on Earth - Europe and Asia, developed complex cultures, and started fighting wars with each other.
Then came the 20th century - the single worst century ever occurred to them. During the first half of the 20th century, they fought two of the deadliest wars in their history which wiped out at least 100 million of them. After 1945, they entered a new era; the nuclear age, which means they devised a way to destroy themselves. They have been living under this existential threat for the past 70+ years and during this time period, they came very close to total destruction multiple times - many times by pure accident and some times by reckless action. One thing I was surprised to see was that they celebrated as they invented a way to kill themselves and other species. I was like, “Who the hell cheers upon their own destruction?”
At the same time, humans were entering a new geological age - Anthropocene. On Earth, geologists put all of the history into different epochs and the one they are in now is called Anthropocene - the era when human activity, not natural processes, are the dominant driver of the change in Earth’s environment. They have done so much damage to the environment under this epoch that now they are on the verge of destroying themselves.
One thing I find interesting is that they call themselves the “most intelligent” species on Earth, but that intelligence is not being used to tackle the two immediate existential threats facing them. They are more interested in discussing what a billionaire says than how to protect the billions from a looming climate crisis. The intensity with which they participate in an election campaign suddenly evaporates when the threat of a nuclear annihilation enters the conversation. The question “Are we gonna survive?” doesn’t get as much attention as “Who’ll be the next PM?”
Yes, they have done a lot of great things, they have accomplished a lot, but what’s the benefit of having an intelligence that’s not being used to ensure survival. Looking at them, it seems like they want to go extinct the same way they forced many animals into extinction. That’s why I don’t like our civilization to be like theirs.
The Alien’s perspective is the best way to describe the rise of humans among many other species and how their greatest advantage became disadvantageous to them. It brings clarity in your worldview and filters out all the nonsense that’s being fed to us day in and day out.
