Biden was interviewed on Sunday by CBS News’s Scott Pelley in an episode of “60 minutes.”
Many things were discussed in a 25-ish-minute interview, with Taiwan being the most important one. We’re going to break down the interview into the segments that matter the most and discuss each segment one by one.
Take a cup of coffee if you want and let’s delve straight into it.
“PANDEMIC IS OVER”
To me, saying “pandemic is over” at a time when on average 400 Americans are still dying due to COVID-19 related reasons each day is like saying the rain is over when the raindrops are still falling from the sky.
The statement “Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape,” seems to have conveniently ignored the millions of Americans who are suffering from Long COVID and 4 million of them who had to leave the workplace.
There’s practically no difference between Biden’s “pandemic is over” and Bush’s “mission accomplished” except for the thing they were referring to.
Since the start of the pandemic, the American ruling class preferred profit of the American businesses over the safety of its people which made it the country with the most COVID-19 related graves. Even now, when the studies show that the virus is evolving into highly mutated variants, Biden’s “pandemic is over” statement shows that the American capitalist class would always put profit first.
DOWNPLAYING 40 YEARS HIGH INFLATION
Scott Pelley: “Last Tuesday, the annual inflation rate came in at 8.3%, the stock market nosedived, people are shocked by their grocery bills. What can you do better and faster?”
Biden: “First of all, let’s put this in perspective. Inflation rate month-to-month was up just an inch, hardly at all…….. We’re in a position where for the last several months it hasn’t spiked.”
What he is trying to say is that people should celebrate that the inflation numbers haven’t spiked for the past few months rather than worrying about it being the highest in 40 years. That’s exactly what he’s trying to say. He spoke it like someone who doesn’t have to go to the grocery store every week/month.
Saying inflation hasn’t spiked for the past few months is not something that the people who are paying record high prices for almost everything want to hear. Dumb excuses are the first resort of the servants of capitalists and this is what they run toward when the pain of being under the exploitative system becomes unbearable for the populace.
Let me imagine what his response would be if the inflation numbers had dropped by 0.1%; “I told you, we’re going to get control of the inflation.”
Thank god, the dementia-suffering President of the US didn’t deny inflation by saying it didn’t rise during his segment on 60 minutes.
“IRONCLAD COMMITMENT”
Scott Pelley: “You're already north of $15 billion in terms of those commitments [regarding Ukraine]. How far do you go?”
Biden: “As long as it takes.”
Scott Pelley: “Ironclad commitment?”
Biden: “Yes.”
The most reckless thing to do in today’s world is to keep provoking the country with the most nukes, but it’s the norm when you are the President of the only country to ever use nukes on the civilians.
The American ruling class wants this war to last as long as it possibly can because they are getting to attack two targets with one arrow: the military-industrial complex stands to rake in billions of dollars from this war and it’s also beneficial for America from a geostrategic point of view. There’s no way the American policy makers are going to take a single step backwards from their provocatory approach to the situation.
If we make a list of the US’s “ironclad commitments” in the war in Ukraine, the idea of democracy and freedom for the Ukrainians would come at the last while preserving the interests of the US imperialists would top the list.
ESCALATING TENSIONS WITH CHINA.
“So unlike Ukraine, to be clear, sir, U.S. forces, U.S. men and women would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion?” Pelley asked.
“Yes,” Biden replied.
This was the fourth time during the past 13 months that the US President said the US would go to war with China if they attack Taiwan, and the White House again walked it back to create confusions at the worst time possible. Why does Biden say the US would defend Taiwan everytime he gets asked only to have it walked by the White House?
Is it because this is a new tactic in “strategic ambiguity” to create confusions? Is it because Biden wants this war desperately? Is it because the US wants to encourage the pro-independence forces in Taiwan? I have no idea because anything is possible during these unprecedented times but one thing I’m sure about is that the world is currently undergoing tectonic shifts that are going to change its course forever.
Gone are the days of “strategic ambiguity”, when the US would never disclose what it would do if China attacked Taiwan, and arrived are the days of “strategy cloaked in ambiguity” when different administrative figures of the US empire say different things.
Taiwan, he said, would “make their own judgments about their independence ... that’s their decision.” This statement alone was enough to downplay the significance of the One China Policy, which states that “There is but one China and Taiwan is a part of China.” If Biden can openly encourage pro-independence forces in Taiwan, what’s the point of the One China Policy which has been a deciding factor behind every country’s relation with China?
The One China policy is the red line for mainland China that should not be crossed under any scenario, but the line doesn’t exist for the warmongers and imperialists in the US who still think they have the authority over other countries.
There are two countries around the world that should be least provoked, and the US is provoking both of them at the same time.
If there was a device or an application that could suppress the minutes long interview into one sentence, here’s what that one sentence would look like in Biden’s case: “I don’t care what problems the Americans are facing, my topmost priority is to escalate tensions with two nuclear superpowers at the same time until we reach a point when there is no one to escalate tensions.”
