ISSUE #59: Victory Day.
Never forget the Red Army's contribution in defeating fascism in Europe.
Today marks the 77th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazism during the WWII.
It is the day when one of the most evil ideology, if not the most, evil ideology of Nazism was thrashed by the Soviet Union’s brave Red Army. The victory over Nazism is simply the biggest victory of the 20th century and it didn’t come easily.
The USSR contributed the most in defeating fascism in Europe. More than 26 million Soviets died during the WWII (also called as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and it was the Red Army that inflicted 80% of the Nazis.
As Ernest Hemingway said, “Anyone who loves freedom owes such a debt to the Red Army that it can never be repaid.”
The USSR’s pre-war population was 200 million, which means 1 in every 8 Soviet being martyred during the Great Patriotic War.
Apart from the human deaths, the infrastructural destruction of the country was similarly cataclysmic. Minsk - capital of Belarus - saw 80% of its buildings demolished by 1945, and 19 out of 332 factories could survive the blow of war. It is estimated that the one third of Soviet Union’s wealth was lost fighting fascism. Without any doubt, the Soviets suffered the most in the world’s struggle against Hitlerism.
It should come as no surprise that the Victory Day is one of the most important events of Russia and former republics of the USSR.
Russia commemorates the sacrifice of the veterans by organising military parades at Red Square every year since 1965. This year was no exception. See it for yourself:
Hundereds of thousands of people gathered with Russian flags and the portraits of the veterans of the Great Patriotic War, and celebrated the surrender of Nazi Germany.
When was the last time you saw the US celebrating this important day? To the contrary, the Western media and textbooks downplay the contribution of the USSR.
I want to share a picture/message that the Times Square in New York displayed today:
If defeating the most hateful ideology of the human history is a shame, then the word “shame” has no meaning. This is the historical reviosionism in full display. They want to erase the significant contribution of the USSR in bringing Hitler to the knees.
We must never let them succeed. Talk/write about the Red Army’s contribution to humanity. Otherwise, they will succeed in their evil mission and make people, mainly the Western, embrace Nazism like in the 1930s. That will be the real shame. Know it.
