ISSUE #61: US troops in Somalia, again.
The most destructive government in the world doing what it's best known for.
Joe Biden, who campaigned for the presidency of the US on a promise to end the “forever wars” led by the US, has given the green signal to the defence authority to carry out military operation in Somalia.
They are using the good old American excuse of “fighting terrorism” to invade a country, when in reality, the reason is to steal the country’s resources. If you have not been living with your fingers plugged into your ears and eyes closed, you should know that every single country that the US has intervened in to “fight terrorism” and “promote democracy” has been sent decades back, which is as ironic as it gets.
They have been trying to justify this act by saying that it’s legal under Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), which was passed after 9/11. It basically gave the US authority to attack any region that the US thinks has terrorists in. Since then, they have been using AUMF to invade countries, destabilize them, topple their democratically-elecetd government, steal its resources, and send them back to stone ages.
In Somalia, the US troops will fight al-Shabab, a terrorist group which is the largest al-Qaeda affiliate. Wait a minute, I thought the US and Al-Qaeda are good friends because it’s the US that’s funding al-Qaeda in Syria to overthrow Assad’s government. That’s how you know that the US has no principles, only interests. If funding terrorists promotes the US interests and helps maintain its global hegemony, the US will do it shamelessly, and will find an excuse to justify it.
According to 2015 report, Somalia has massive untapped oil, perhaps as much as 110 billion barrels. In February this year, the President of Somalia rejected a deal signed by the Somalian petroleum ministry with the US firm, Coastline Exploration. The deal was related to offshore oil and gas exploration. The President said he would “take all appropriate measures to protect our national resources.”
Given the US’s affection towards the oil reserves of foreign countries, it should come as no surprise that the Washington is now using its preferred diplomatic tool - the military - to steal country’s resources, after the oil exploration deal was rejected by Somalia.
Calling the US troops out of Afghanistan in 2021 was not about “ending” forever wars, it was about using them in other countries to NOT end the forever wars.
