ISSUE #84: Mother Earth is being killed.
The planet that gave us the perfect environment to evolve while no other planet could, the planet that gave us food while no other planet could, the planet that provided us the opportunity to live this beautiful life while no other planet could, the planet that we depend upon for survival, is being killed right before our eyes.
What angers me is not that the primates having the most complex brains on this planet are destroying the ecosystem, but our ignorance of this reality is what drives me furious. Instead of working together to come up with ways to heal the Earth, we are acting as if some greedy tech billionaires are going to invent new technologies that are going to take us to another planet before we rip this one up. This is what’s irritating.
From what I have experienced, the reason people don’t understand the magnitude of the climate catastrophe that we are headed towards is that they have been conditioned into believing that climate change is not real.
Climate change deniers of today are the equivalent of the dinosaurs that neglected the asteroid heading towards earth. 65 million years later, the only memory we have of dinosaurs is their fossils.
To deny climate change is to deny the forming of vast continents of plastic inside ocean waters that endangers many aquatic species.
To deny climate change is to deny the fact that the soil is becoming rapidly infertile.
To deny climate change is to deny the reality which is that insects and forests are disappearing.
To deny climate change is to think that the chart below is horseshit, in which we are fast approaching the deadly 1.5-2.0 degrees celsius mark.
To deny climate change is to hope for the extinction of humanity and other innocent species.
To deny climate change is to think that infinite growth on a planet with finite resources is possible.
To deny climate change is to promote capitalist propaganda.
All of this is happening while you are reading this text. Mother Earth is screaming for help while you are reading this text. Our planet is being raped by greedy sociopaths for profit while YOU ARE READING THIS TEXT.
In the pursuit of profit, the oligarchs have betrayed the very planet that gave them a space to live in the vast universe. The Earth can never be saved as long as human behaviour is driven by profit and competition. In a system where people who have no empathy and who are willing to rape the planet, throw anyone under the bus, betray anyone to get ahead are rewarded, the planet can never even begin to heal, let alone fully recover.
In a society where human actions are dictated by competition and profit,
How would you make it more profitable to leave a tree standing for the benefit that it provides than to cut it down?
How would you make it more profitable to leave the fuel sources in the ground rather than to dig them up?
How would you make it more profitable to NOT use the dangerous pesticides that are killing the soil?
The simple answer is YOU CAN’T.
The very system that brought us into this mess can never save us from the looming threat of climate change. Our old ways of doing things, old ways of looking at the world, old solutions to the problem that worsens every year have brought us to this point where we are fighting for the survival of our species.. You do not propose capitalism as a solution to the climate change for the same reasons that you don’t ask the person suffering from lung cancer to smoke. Smoking can at best worsen the condition of patient and at worst lead to his death; capitalism can at best worsen the climate change and at worst kill us all. It can never save humanity from going the way of dinosaurs.
We are going to have to drastically shift from the traditional competition and profit based model to a collaboration based model where we work in collaboration with fellow humans and the planet for the harmonious flourishing of both the humanity and the planet, where we don’t destroy our ecosystem for profit, where we don’t kill each other to get ahead. Of course, you can call it as something unprecedented, but these are unprecedented times, and we are going to need unprecedented measures to stop the curtain from being closed on humanity.
We must stop clinging to our old behaviour patterns:
Asking people to ride bicycles doesn’t mean anything as long as the billionaires and politicians travel in their private jets even for a 3-minute flight. It’s NOT going to save us.
Asking people to stop using plastic bags doesn’t mean anything as long as the corporations throw tons of plastic in the oceans. It’s NOT going to save us.
Imposing carbon tax on the vehicle owners is horseshit as long as the oil companies are being subsidized. It’s NOT going to save us.
Asking people to plant a tree is meaningless as long as it’s profitable to cut down a tree. It’s NOT going to save us.
So, stop acting like you are “protecting” the planet while doing anything of the above. These are old solutions based on our old thinking patterns, and we have seen over the years how ineffective they are. No solution can save us as long as we are driven by profit and competition. Period.
If humanity has any future, it will only be enabled by we learning to collaborate with each other and the ecosystem for the benefit of both of us. We can’t compete and consume our way out of this.
